Getting Started - Your First 90 Days
Your first 90 days set the tone for long-term success. This section walks through everything you need to begin effectively
Logistics & Location Checklist
Before you begin, answering these practical questions is crucial for removing adoption barriers:
Hardware Location: Where will the headset(s) live? Keep in mind accessibility is key, with our most successful implementations institutions assign a single headset to a single student and they simply take their headsets home. Other common locations include Skill labs, resident lounges, libraries, etc.
Initial Rollout: Consider who should be the first group of users?
- PGY-1s for a bootcamp.
- PGY-3s for a specific rotation.
- Mentor and mentee pairs of junior and senior residents
A "Crawl-Walk-Run" Example: Kettering Health Dayton
One of our most successful institutional partners, Kettering Health Dayton, introduces PrecisionOS VR during the first week of PGY1, getting residents comfortable with the platform right from the start.
Attending surgeons then mentor these new residents by using the collaboration feature to “scrub-in” together for virtual simulations. This allows them to explain key procedural steps and surgical preferences before the resident even steps foot into their real-world O.R.
This shared experience primes residents on faculty expectations and builds immediate buy-in. It signals that attendings are invested in the software and its benefits. This is reinforced by simple, powerful questions like, “Have you practiced in VR ahead of our case today?” which solidifies the expectation of use and highlights its value in acquiring skills and reducing cognitive load in the O.R.
This accelerated model breaks down as follows:
- Crawl (Week 1 - The "Bootcamp"): Introduce PrecisionOS VR to all PGY-1 residents during their orientation to get them comfortable with the hardware and software.
- Walk (Month 1 - Faculty Mentorship): Have attending surgeons "scrub-in" with new residents using the Multi-User/Collaboration feature. This establishes faculty buy-in and mentorship.
- Run (Ongoing - The "Toolkit" & "Curriculum"): Faculty reinforces the habit by asking residents, “Have you practiced in VR ahead of our case today?” This embeds VR as a standard pre-OR preparation tool, driving long-term engagement and reducing cognitive load in the real OR.

Overcoming Common Hurdles (FAQ)
Here are a few common questions we hear from new partners and how we can address them together:
How do we implement this successfully when we are already time strapped for programs already implemented?
We designed the "Rotational Toolkit" model for this exact reason. It functions as a flexible, self-paced "textbook". Furthermore, high-fidelity VR simulation is often more efficient than traditional labs once travel, setup, and single-use model costs are considered.
“Isn’t this just a video game? How do we know residents are improving surgical skill rather than just getting good a VR?”
Unlike a game, this is a data-driven training platform. We track objective analytics to measure proficiency and create a powerful feedback loop. Our platform is built on a "Watch, Practice, Perform" learning cycle validated by expert surgeons.
“What more can we do to drive success at our institution?"
Faculty engagement can be a driver for success. All educational initiatives are more effective when faculty driven. We recommend starting small. Identify one or two faculty members to lead a single Multi-User session or champion the "Have you prepped in VR?" question on a single rotation. Success and resident feedback will build momentum from there.
