Best practices for in-person demos

Tips to run successful in-person demos.

Set up a guardian before the demo starts

You can use your Quest headset in Roomscale or Stationary Mode; however, the Roomscale boundary is recommended for the PrecisionOS platform for a more immersive experience. You will need to have a cleared space to move around - 2m x 2m (6.5ft x 6.5ft) is recommended, but you can get away with roughly half of that if necessary. Watch the instructional video on how to set up your guardian zone here.

Important - If you are participating in a collaborative session, please note that leaving the Guardian boundary you set up will result in being disconnected from the session, and you will need to rejoin the session using the 4-digit meeting ID.

Recommendation - In instances where the headset will be taken off or be shared between users, it is a good idea to mark off a spot on the floor in the middle of the guardian zone and ensure that the headset always remains in that location when not actively used; this will prevent the headset from being disconnected.

Teach VR basics

Explain the basics of VR before the user puts on the headset. For example, it is much easier to show which buttons to press on the controllers before someone puts the VR headset on.

Cast the demo

A great feature of the Quest headset and the PrecisionOS platform is that it allows the participant in the headset to share what they see in VR with others around them. This is great when you need to help them with the procedure as you can see what they are doing. You can cast to your computer, phone, or supported Chromecast device or TV. Before you begin casting, make sure your headset and casting device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Factors to consider while casting include:

  • Casting may increase battery usage or degrade in-app performance.
  • You may experience issues when casting and recording simultaneously.
  • Exiting or minimizing the Oculus app may interrupt casting.
  • TVs with built-in Chromecast or other smart functionality may be supported, but compatibility cannot be guaranteed with all models.

If you have more than one VR headset at your demo location and for an even more immersive experience, you can join the person doing the demo in a Collaborate session.

Avoid sleep mode on your headset

If you are looking for ways to keep the Quest 2 display turned on when you remove the headset, then you can try the following:

  • Change the headset sleep period - You can modify your headset's Automatic sleep period setting (the default value is 15 seconds). You will find the option in the general device settings under the "Power" options. While this setting doesn't keep the display of your headset turned on when you remove the headset, it prevents your Quest 2 from going to sleep too quickly. So this way, when you put your headset back on, it promptly displays a loading screen and then resumes right where you left off.
  • Cover the proximity sensor with tape - The proximity sensor in the Quest 2 is located between the lenses just above the number that shows the selected IPD level (distance between your pupils). All you have to do is cut a small piece of opaque tape and apply it over the sensor area.
  • Keep the headset on your forehead - This method is suitable for all situations. If you don't want your Quest 2 to go to sleep and/or the display to turn off, simply place the headset on your forehead. This is extremely useful when you want to grab something quickly or get the bearings of your external surroundings.

Hygiene tips for Virtual Reality users

As any VR user knows, sweat and heat can quickly build up when you’re wearing a headset which can lead to an unhygienic environment. Therefore, it is important to maintain excellent hygiene for the headset during the demos.
