My headset won't power on / How to fix headset black screen

There are several reasons why your headset won't power on or why a black screen may occur, and there are various possible solutions. Here are some of the ways to troubleshoot it:

  1. Make sure to charge the headset. You’ll see nothing but a black screen if the headset has no charge. Plug the headset into a compatible USB charger, and leave it alone for a while. If it doesn’t seem to be charging, try a different charger, or make sure you’re using a compatible charger.
  2. Try opening the Oculus menu. While faced with a black screen, try pressing the menu button on your left controller or the Oculus button on your right controller. If this gives you access to the menu, try opening an app to see if that fixes the black screen problem.
  3. Try launching a game via the Oculus app on your phone. This will tell you if your app can detect your headset. If it does, start a game, and see whether your headset comes back to life.
  4. It’s also possible that the headset is undergoing a software update. If the headset is attempting to update, then leaving it alone while plugged into power may allow it to finish the update and return to regular operation.
  5. Check the proximity sensor and clean it with a microfibre cloth. Then try covering the sensor and see if the screen starts working again.
  6. If none of the previous steps fixed the black screen problem, then perform a hard reboot. To do this, press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. This will cause the Quest to perform a hard reset, which may resolve the fault.
  7. If you can’t perform a hard reboot with just the power button, try performing a hard reboot from the bootloader menu. To do this:
    1. Press and hold the volume down and power buttons for at least 10 seconds.
    2. Highlight boot device using the volume buttons.
    3. Press the power button to hard reboot your Quest.
  8. If none of these work, the last resort will be to factory reset the headset. Doing this removes all of your data from the headset and returns it to an original factory state, so it is important to ensure that this is the last option. To do this, click here.
